DUTY OF CARE AND RISK MANAGEMENT FOR BUSINESS TRAVELERS
Duty of care is the legal obligation to consciously take reasonably care for traveling employees. Risk management is a proactive approach to minimize risks and negative experiences for business travelers and keep them as safe as possible. A successful risk management strategy has five pillars:
Integrated approach: All stakeholders should be part of the project team and involved in decision making
Assessing risks: Determining the level and nature of the risk for the entire journey before departure
Preparation and risk prevention: Supporting the traveler in making appropriate decisions before and during the trip
Communicate: Stay in touch, ask for feedback, learn from the experiences, capture them, and use this knowledge for future travel.
Evaluate: Discuss situations and experiences with all stakeholders. At least annually and adjust policy and implementation if desired.
THE CHALLENGE FOR BUSINESSES
Setting up an appropriate risk management program for corporate travel is a real challenge. The responsibilities lie with different stakeholders, and it is not always clear who is in charge of which part.
How can you work with hidden, shielded, and fragmented information? In addition, senior management, and the travelers themselves are often not fully involved in making business travel safer, while this will contribute to a successful policy and appropriate solutions.
